<b>2012 Yamaha Jazz Experience Competition</b>

Yamaha UK are inviting young musicians send in a video of their band playing two pieces for the Yamaha Jazz Experience Competition. Musicians should be aged between 11 - 18 with up to 8 musicians in the band - which must include bass, drums and a harmony instrument. Bill Martin of Yamaha says "Our judges are looking for convincing performances demonstrating improvising, fluency in the jazz language, sense of ensemble, good internal and external communication during the performances".

Videos must reach Yamaha UK by 24 Feb and 9 finalists will then be invited to perform at Cheltenham Jazz Festival in May 2012, in front of our jazz judges and the festival audience. The judges will choose a winning ensemble from each age category: u-15, u-17 and u-19, who will win gigs at top London jazz clubs. This means that younger ensembles stand a real chance of getting through.

Further details 2012 Yamaha Jazz Experience Competition

-- Delivered by Feed43 service

<b>Richard Turner 1984 - 2011</b>

We are sad to report the news that trumpeter Richard Turner died on Thursday 11 August as a result of a sudden seizure. Richard grew up in Leeds and as a teenager was a familiar face at jam sessions and gigs. Even at a young age it was obvious he was going to be an exceptional jazz musician. Richard left Leeds to study at the Royal Academy. Since then he has made a name for himself on the national and London scene.

From London Jazz: "Richard started the gig at the Con Cellar Bar in Camden and ran it for nearly four years, welcoming great musicians: Fly (Mark Turner, Jeff Ballard, Larry Grenadier), Donny McCaslan, Ingrid Jensen, Will Vinson, Joel Frahm, Julian Siegel, Phil Robson, Gwilym Simcock, Kit Downes, The Calum Gourlay- Freddy Gavita Big Band, Matt Penman....down those narrow stairs. He also led the band Round Trip, whose debut album Chris Parker reviewed for us. This is a tragic loss to those close to Richard, and deepest sympathies go to them. For the rest of us, Richard's contribution to the London music scene has been immense, can only be responded to with huge gratitude, and will be irreplaceable".

londonjazz.blogspot.com/.../rip-richard-turner

 Richard Turner

-- Delivered by Feed43 service
