The group includes Nick Keleher, son of Dan and Janie Keleher; Evan McQuillen, son of Paul and Maureen McQuillen; Olivia Pham, daughter of Paul and Phuong Pham; Susan Sattich, daughter of Bill and Barbara Sattich; and Daniel Sauceda, son of Baldomero and Patricia Sauceda.

In addition, Keleher and Sauceda were recently announced as recipients of prestigious 2010 Academic All-State Awards from the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence. The
awards go to the top 100 public school high school seniors. There were 621 nominees statewide this year hailing from 75 different schools in 68 school districts from throughout the Sooner State.

During Monday’s board meeting, BHS principal Teri Brant introduced each of the students. The students made their way around the board table, shaking the hands of each of the seven board members as well as Dr. Gary W. Quinn, the superintendent of the Bartlesville Public School District. Board president Marta Manning presented each student with a special certificate to commemorate their achievement. “These five students are excellent representatives of our senior class,” said Brant. “They have worked hard and been supported by their families and teachers along the way. We look forward to what the future brings these students as well as their entire senior class.”

Each of this year’s Academic All-State Award recipients will receive a $1,000 merit-based scholarship and a medallion. In addition, the All-Staters will be recognized at the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence’s 24th annual Academic Awards Banquet on Saturday, May 22, at the Renaissance Tulsa Hotel and Convention Center. This year’s All-Staters scored an average of 33 on the ACT, which is a college entrance exam. The students are nominated by their principals or superintendents and are selected on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community involvement, as well as an essay submitted by each nominee.

The names of the approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship Program from throughout the country were announced last summer. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists had to fulfi ll several requirements
to advance to the finalist level of the competition.

Established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual national Merit Program, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation is a not-for-profit organizationwhich operates without government assistance. Scholarships awarded through the program are underwritten by
NMSC’s own funds and approximately 500 business organizations and higher education institutions which share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.

All five of the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists from BHS – Keleher, McQuillen, Pham, Sattich and Sauceda – achieved finalist status. As seniors, each member of the esteemed group is making college plans. Keleher plans to attend the University of
Notre Dame and major in aerospace engineering, while Sauceda plans to study at the Oklahoma State University and possibly pursue a double-major in mechanical and aerospace engineering. Sattich plans to attend the University of Oklahoma and major in computer science, while McQuillen plans to major in architecture at OSU.
