Dear Parents,

This letter is to update you on information related to West Nile Virus (WNV), a virus you may have heard about in the news recently.  West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus that has been found in dead birds and squirrels in the Livermore area. No cases of human infection have been reported in Livermore. The virus was first detected in the United States in 1999 in New York City and is transmitted to people and animals by infected mosquitoes. The virus is most prevalent from May to October when mosquitoes are most abundant.

Many people who are infected with WNV have no symptoms. Approximately 15 percent of individuals who are infected develop an illness with fever, headache, nausea, body aches, skin rash, or swollen lymph nodes. There is no specific treatment for infection with WNV, although supportive care is important. Always consult your personal physician if there is a question.

The best defense against WNV is to limit exposure to mosquitoes and the infections they may carry.

Avoid spending time outside at dawn and dusk
When outdoors, wear long pants, long sleeves, and other protective clothing
Apply insect repellent containing DEET
Make sure doors and windows have tight fitting screens
Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property

Please be reassured no child or adult within our District has been infected. This information is for your knowledge and use.   1. The contest is open to students who will be 11, 12, or 13 years of age on November 15, 2007.
  2. The contest theme for 2007 is “Peace Around the World”
  3. Artwork must be no smaller than 13” x 20” and no larger than 20” x 24”
  4. Only one entry per student, and each entry must be the work of only one student
  5. All artwork must be the student’s original creation.  Duplications are not accepted.
  6. All media are accepted.  NOTE:  Chalk, charcoal, and pastel entries should be sealed with a fixative spray to prevent smearing.  Do not laminate entries.
  7. Three-dimensional entries will not be accepted.  Nothing may be glued, stapled, or attached to the artwork in any way.
  8. The use of lettering or numbering on the front of the poster, in any language, is not allowed.  All signatures, names, initials, school name, etc should be written on the back of the poster.
  9. Artwork should be done on a flexible material, so it can be rolled for shipping in a mailing tube.  Do not fold the poster.

Judging Criteria:
The posters are evaluated on three criteria: Expression of the theme, artistic merit, and originality.

Visit the Peace Poster section of the Lions clubs International web site, http://www.lionsclubs.org/ , to view prior merit award and grand prize posters.  Click on Youth Programs and then Peace Poster Contest. 

Contest Levels:
The Lions International Peace Poster Contest begins with each middle school student in the world!  Last year over 350,000 students in 65 counties participated.

The first contest is held at your school with the selection of the best poster from your school.  The principal and teachers decide on the judging.

The Livermore Lions will hold an awards dinner in December for the school winners and each school winner will receive a prize of $20 and a certificate.  Each school will receive $25.

The second level of the contest is the District contest.  The winning posters from each middle school in Alameda & Contra Costa Counties are evaluated by a panel of independent judges and a winning poster is selected. 

The district winner will receive a trophy and the student’s school will receive $100.  4 Honorable Mention students will also receive a trophy and their schools will also receive $100.

Last year’s District winner was                Karla Rodriquez, Gr. 7, Excelsior Middle School, Byron.
Last year’s Honorable Mention were:       Anastasia Dencic, Gr. 8, Walnut Creek Intermediate, Walnut Creek.
                                                            Lei Wei, Gr. 7, Christensen Middle School, Livermore.
                                                            Michelle Witcher, Gr. 7, Oak Grove Middle School, Concord.
                                                            Eric Sanchez, Gr. 7, St. Joseph’s School, Pinole.

 The third level of the contest is the Multiple District contest.  In our case, that is the State of California.  The winning posters from each District are evaluated by a panel of independent judges and the winning poster is selected.

Last year’s Calif. Winner was                  Min-Ji Yi, 13 years old, Tarzana, CA

The final level of the contest is the International contest.  The winning posters from each Multiple District in the world are evaluated by a panel of independent judges and the Grand Prize Winner and 23 Merit Award winners are selected.

The Grand Prize Winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to the United Nations in New York for Lions Day and will receive a cash award of $2500 and an engraved plaque.  The 23 Merit Award Winners receive a cash award of $500 and a Certificate of Achievement.

Janet Montes' unexpected death last summer left a staff grieving.  Boa Day was created to celebrate Janet's birthday and to remember the life of a very dear friend.
